Social Location Based Service WhosHere Raises $1.5 Million

WhosHere is a social location based mobile app that has raised their first round of institutional funding. WhosHere has raised $1.25 million in funding led by Lightbank. Lightbank is a Chicago-based fund that was started by Groupon co-founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell.

WhosHere was made by three year old start-up company myRete. WhosHere is an iOS app that offers users the promise that they can meet people near-by. The app lets people “meet nearby people” and provides free SMS texting, free MMS image sending, and free VoIP calls.

WhosHere is about 4 million registered users and they send an average of 10 million messages per day and 2 billion SMS messages in 14 languages total. The company is profitable with revenue hitting about $1 million as of June 2011.

“WhosHere has already created a profitable business with significant traction leveraging location, social and mobile,” stated Lightbank partner Paul Lee. “We’re excited to be working with the team to take their business to the next level.”
