New White House CIO Steven VanRoekel Is A Former Microsoft Exec
Steven VanRoekel is the current managing director of the FCC and was a former Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) executive. VanRoekel will become the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the federal government on Thursday where he will be responsible for the $80 billion per year IT budget.
The CIO government position is pretty new as it was created by Obama’s administration. Responsibilities include managing the IT budget and improving security practices.
Before working at the FCC, VanRoekel was a Microsoft executive in the Windows Server and Tools division. Before VanRoekel, Vivek Kundra served as the CIO.
Kundra worked there until March 2009 and introduced products like the IT Dashboard, which is a public website that tracks the spending and progress of federal IT projects. Kundra also encouraged the government to depend on cloud computing rather than the desktop.
