E La Carte Raises $4 Million From Lightbank

E La Carte is a company that has developed a tablet product for restaurants and other hospitality-related companies. E La Carte has raised $4 million in funding from Lightbank, the company that was made by Groupon co-founders Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell. E La Carte previously raised over $1 million from SV Angel, Dave McClure, Joshua Schachter, Roy Rodenstein, and Skip Sack.

E La Carte recently launched a service called Presto, which brings user-friendly tablets to restaurants. The 7-inch tablet has a digital menu where you can look through a restaurant’s food and drink selection. Kids can play games through the tablet too. And lastly there is a tab for paying. Presto tablets has a full-day battery life. If you have food allergies, you can enter them into the tablet. Once your order is ready, you can send it wirelessly to the kitchen. E La Carte allows you to split the tab and pay for different items. The tablet has a card swiper built-in. There are also buttons for 15%, 20%, etc.

E La Carte was founded by Rajat Suri, who said that E La Carte is being used by 100 eateries and there is a waiting list of 150. Customers include Pizzeria Venti and Umami Burger. Installations can cost as low as $200 per restaurant.

E La Carte said that the iPad was not used because it was not optimal for their goals of creating a smaller and lightweight device. The company actually exchanged e-mails with Steve Jobs on whether to work with the iPad. But Steve Jobs advised them to build off of the iOS and iPad platform. The company plans on using the funding for product development, sales, and marketing.
