NYPD Creates Unit to Track Potential Crime on Social Networks

The NYPD has created a new juvenile justice unit that will use social media to help catch New York City criminals. The New York Daily News reports that Assistant Commissioner Kevin O’Connor, “known for his success in online policing,” will head the unit, which will track Twitter, Facebook and other networks for information about house parties and other potentially volatile situations. The NYPD has previously encountered incidents where a murder was bragged about on Facebook, and a Facebook event gone viral led to an overcrowded party that ended in a shooting.

Klout users with iPhones score an average of 42, and Android owners come in last at 40.6. The scores rank between 1 and 100 and are calculated based on social networking interactions like replies and retweets. Gizmodo theorizes that RIM devotees are more influential because Blackberry owners tend to be “corporate executives, often C-level types” and thus engage in more professional online chatter.
