Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has announced the Kindle Fire tablet computer. The Kindle Fire has a 7-inch display and sells for $199. While this may appear to be Amazon’s direct challenge to Apple’s $199 iPad tablet, the Kindle Fire tablet does not have a camera, microphone, or 3G wireless network connection. The Kindle Fire runs on Google’s Android software. The Kindle Fire can be ordered today. The Fire has WiFi connectivity and a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime. Amazon’s tablet is not exactly based entirely on the Android operating system. They have added some of their own elements to the operating system. [Bloomberg]
