On Tuesday October 4, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is believed to be hosting an event to unveil a new iPhone or iPhones. The new iPhone is expected to be called either the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5. The date is subject to change, but that is unlikely. The new device(s) would then be available within several weeks after the announcement. Glam Media is a company that is considered a social content platform for websites that focuses primarily on women’s interests. Glam will be acquiring Ning.com, a website that allows you to easily create your own social network. Ning.com was co-founded by Silicon Valley Internet tycoon Marc Andreessen. The price is rumored to be about $200 million in cash, stock, or some combination. It is believed that Glam Media is going public soon so Ning is likely to have received a substantial amount of shares.

Geolocation application company Foursquare has hit one billion check-ins. The application went from 100 million check-ins in July 2010 to 200 million in October 2010. Then they hit 750 million check-ins in June 2011. Foursquare has launched a new version of the app. Now it has a tab for its new Lists feature. Check out the video below:

The content is ad-supported. The application is called WSJ Social and it filters through content from the publication through Facebook’s social graph to provide a tailored experience for different users.

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) is preparing to begin major layoffs at the webOS division. HP announced back in August that they are shutting down the webOS hardware business. According to sources with AllThingsD, HP is planning to lay off as many as 525 people.
