How Apple Lobbies Educators Into Using Their Products

The New York Times recently decided to look into how Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) lobbies educators to use their products. Apple products have been rapidly adopted in schools, colleges, and universities. As a matter of fact, several institutions has provided their students with iPads to use as an alternative to textbooks.

Apple often has high ranking school administrators at schools meet with executives at their Cupertino campus. Apple then shows how computers and handheld devices can improve learning for children. This lobbying has not been heavily publicized because the educators are asked to sign confidentiality agreements.

Over the past 2 years, Apple has been lobby school administrators from Little Falls, Minnesota. Apple paid for their hotels and meals throughout the trip. The school system at Little Falls ended up paying Apple $1.2 million by giving iPads to 1,700 of their 2,500 students at a celebration in the school gym. An Apple executive gave a pep talk in a video chat to 200 teachers shortly after.

Some people are worried that Apple’s lobbying of educators may have a negative impact. But Apple noted that they actively advise schools to work within their local regulations.
