Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has acquired a Charlotte-based voice-to-text startup company called Yap according to an SEC filing. The acquisition was completed in September and no public announcement has been made by either company. Even the SEC filing does not mention Amazon.com specifically, but Yap has merged with a company called “Dion Acquisition Sub” with an address 410 Terry Avenue in Seattle, Washington. This happens to be an Amazon.com building.
The voicemail-to-text service has been in private beta, but the underlying I.P. has reached beyond the beta app. Yap was founded by Igor Jablokov and Victor Jablokov in 2006. The company raised $6.5 million in Series A in June 2008. The round of funding was led by SunBridge Partners. Likely what this means is that that Amazon.com will be using these features in future tablets.
