In the last several days, Facebook users were victimized into sharing alinks, videos, and images of pornography and violent images. Facebook said that it was a coordinated spam attack. Today Facebook said that they now know who is responsible.
“In addition to the engineering teams that build tools to block spam we also have a dedicated enforcement team that has already identified those responsible and is working with our legal team to ensure appropriate consequences follow,” stated a Facebook spokesperson. The identities of the spammers was not disclosed by Facebook.
Facebook users were tricked into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript into their browser’s URL bar. Facebook started shutting down Pages and profiles that spread the malicious scripts.
If you have the virus, change your Facebook password immediately. Also go to Account Settings -> Apps -> Remove apps that you do not trust and have not seen before.
