Facebook Is Developing A Smartphone Code-Named Buffy
Facebook is working with HTC on building a smartphone code-named “Buffy.” The phone will revolve completely around the social network service. Buffy will run on a modified version of Android and will have HTML5 as a platform for Facebook applications according to sources with AllThingsD.
Facebook also recently chose HTC over Samsung. The Buffy Facebook phone is expected to arrive in between 12 to 18 months. The project is rumored to be led by Facebook CTO Bret Taylor and has been an on-going project over the last 2 years.
“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world,” said a Facebook spokesperson.
Facebook currently has 350 million active mobile users and has a relationship with 475 different global mobile operators. Facebook plays simple support roles with these mobile operators. HTC has also previously built mobile devices with a dedicated Facebook button. Inq Mobile and Motorola has also made mobile devices with Facebook buttons. This article was written by Amit Chowdhry.
