Personally I learned how to start playing the recorder in 4th grade and then I played the clarinet between 5th and 8th grade. Many of the common instruments have gone virtual are in the form of software applications. The Apple App Store specifically has a plethora of musical instrument applications. Bloom was create by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers. The app is self-proclaimed as being part instrument, part composition, and part artwork. Bloom’s control allows people to create patterns and melodies by tapping on the screen. There are 12 different mood settings, random mood shuffle, and adjustable delay. I find this app as being very zen-like and calming.
Cat Piano is an app that plays meow sounds. The app has over one octave (14 notes per voice). If you have a cat, then it is likely to respond to the sounds. The keyboard is highly responsive and the meows are in 16-bit. There are 10 voices for the Cat Piano. This app is guaranteed to be a good time for the cat fans.
Chromatic Tuner by Bitcount is a special app because it was used by the alternative music group known as Gorillaz on their album called “The Fall.” Cleartune is a chromatic tuner and pitch pipe for quickly tuning your instrument with a built-in mic for iPhones. It can use an external mic for iPod Touches. Cleartune has a unique “note wheel” interface to quickly find your pitch.
