Twitter Buys Encryption Company Whisper Systems

Moxie Marlinspike is best known for creating cryptography software. Some of his software was made independently and others was for his mobile security startup, Whisper Systems. Whisper Systems has been acquired by Twitter and their team will be hired.

Currently Whisper Systems only has 2 employees. The two employees include Marlinspike and researcher Stuart Anderson. Some of the software that Whisper Systems has built thus far includes an Android application that encrypts calls and text messages. Another application encrypts all data and monitors communication going into and coming out of Android apps.

“The Whisper Systems team is joining Twitter starting today,” said Twitter in a statement. “As part of our fast-growing engineering team, they will be bringing their technology and security expertise to Twitter’s products and services. We’re happy to have Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson onboard.”

Whisper Systems did not focus just on mobile applications. Marlinspike also released web encryption software such as SSLStrip, which exposes vulnerabilities in secure websites. Another web encryption program that Marlinspike put together is called Convergence, which focused on solving unreliable certificate authorities.
