Apple Says Siri’s Inability To Find Abortion Clinics Is A Glitch
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has admitted that Siri’s inability to locate abortion clinics is a glitch. Initially people suspected that Siri was anti-abortion, but Apple said that Siri is a work-in-progress and it lacks answers on several topics.
On an abortioneers blog, clinic employees reported that they tested Siri in the parking lot of their office by asking “Siri, I’m pregnant and I want to have an abortion.” The Apple virtual assistant replied by saying “I can’t find any abortion clinics nearby.”
Siri did provide suggestions to adoption centers, baby stores, and pregnancy resource facilities though. Yesterday the American Civil Liberties Union started a campaign called “Set Siri straight.”
“If Siri can tell us about Viagra, it should not provide bad or no information about contraceptives or abortion care,” said the ACLU on their home page.
“Our customers use Siri to find out all types of information and while it can find out a lot, it doesn’t always find out what you want,” stated Apple CEO Tim Cook in a written response. “These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone, it simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better and we will in the coming weeks.”
