Microsoft Says NFC Is Built Into Windows Phone 7.5, But Manufacturers Have Not Enabled It Yet

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has reported that Windows Phone 7.5 has Near Field Communication (NFC) built in to their smartphones, but none of the manufacturing companies have enabled the feature as of yet.

“As far as I’m aware, NFC is supported by [Windows Phone], but needs to be enabled by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). So, if any OEM wants to enable it, that can be done by all means,” stated Microsoft product manager and developer evangelist Will Coleman. Coleman added “Think it’s about just about timing, in the not too distant future there are some exciting things that will be coming through with NFC from Microsoft.”

Microsoft is rumored to be working on making an NFC wallet technology service in their platform, which would be a Google Wallet competitor. Rumor also has it that Microsoft’s service would be called “Beaming,” which is a swipe at Google’s Android Beam.
