Twitter To Start Censoring Tweets In Other Countries

Twitter has announced today that they will start allowing foreign governments to censor tweets in their own countries. It is pretty shocking to hear about Twitter censoring information because they have been a useful tool when arranging protests against dictators across the Middle East. Now governments will be able to silence people that want to protest beliefs that only dictators may believe in. In a blog post, Twitter wrote about the positive side of the changes.

“As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression,” stated Twitter in a blog post. “Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content.”

Currently the only way Twitter can block content is by deleting tweets. The new policy allows Twitter to block users in specific countries from seeing certain tweets. “Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country — while keeping it available in the rest of the world,” added the company.
