Senator Schumer Calls For FTC To Probe Apple and Google
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has asked the FTC to investigate reports that applications on Android and the iPhone tend to steal private photos and contacts, then post them online without consent. Schumer’s request happened shortly after Apple tweaked their privacy policies last month.
Schumer said that he was concerned about a New York Times report that iPhone and Android apps can access a user’s private photo collection. He also referred to a discovery last month that apps on the iPhone and iPad were able to upload entire address books with names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
“These uses go well beyond what a reasonable user understands himself to be consenting to when he allows an app to access data on the phone for purposes of the app’s functionality,” stated Schumer in a letter to the FTC.This article was written by Amit Chowdhry.
