HTML5 videos are elements that were introduced in the HTML5 draft specification for the purpose of playing videos and movies. HTML5 video is to become a new standard way to show video online, but there has been disagreements about which video formats should be supported in the video element.
Google acquired On2 in 2010, which resulted in the acquisition of VP8 video format by Google. Google provided royalty-free licenses for VP8. Google also started WebM, which combines non-standardized VP8 video codec with Vorbis audio in a Matroska container. Google said in January 2011 that they are ending native support of H.264 in Chrome. After the launch of WeM, Mozilla and Opera called for the inclusion of VP8 in HTML.
