Global Payments Inc. was hit with a data breach, which has put 50,000 Visa and MasterCard holders at risk. The cause of the breach was not immediately determined and so far it is unknown whether cardholders were hit with fraudulent transactions.

MasterCard and Visa have been alerting card-issuing bank customers about the breach. An independent data security organization is conducting a forensic review of the matter.

“MasterCard’s own systems have not been compromised in any manner,” stated a MasterCard company spokesman said in a statement. MasterCard will “continue to both monitor this event and take steps to safeguard account information.”

Visa provided the banks with the affected account numbers so that they can protect consumers through independent fraud monitoring. The U.S. Secret Service is also investigating the breach.
