E Ink is a display technology used on Kindle e-book devices since they are easier to read than traditional backlit LCD panels. However the E Ink Kindle devices require an exterior illumination for reading. Amazon.com is working on fixing this problem and TechCrunch has reported that they have seen a new Kindle prototype that uses front-lit displays. This provides an adjustable “soft glow,” which makes reading text more readable in low-light environments.
The technology is being developed by a company called Oy Modilis, which Amazon acquired in 2010. The layer of material would be laminated on top of the E Ink screen, which would diffuse light evenly across the surface. TechCrunch added that the front-lit Kindle is expected to launch later this year.
