Company Name Origin

Paul Allen and Bill Gates were childhood friends that shared a passion for computer programming. In the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics, the Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) Altair 8800 microcomputer was featured. Allen noticed that they would be able to program a BASIC interpreter for the device. Gates called MITS and claimed to have a working interpreter so MITS requested a demo.

Of course they did not actually have one so Gates and Allen got to work. Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter. The interpreter worked on the simulator and happen to work just fine on the MITS in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March 1975. MITS agreed to distribute it and market it as the Altair BASIC. The two established Microsoft on April 4, 1975. Allen came up with the original name “Micro-Soft,” a combination of the words microcomputer and software.
