Leap Motion Designs Accurate 3D Motion System For $70

Leap Motion is a San Francisco, California based startup company that has just released a demo of the Leap 3D motion control system. It can track motion at 0.1mm accuracy, which is 100 times more accurate than the Kinect. Leap Motion creates a 3D workspace of around four cubic feet. It consists of a small USB device, sensors, and cameras.

Leap provided a demo video to CNET that showed how the OS navigation worked and how web browsing works with a single finger. Writing with a pencil was very accurate as if you were writing on a piece of paper yourself. Pinch to zoom, 3D modeling, and gaming worked very well with Leap as well. Leap Motion is releasing an SDK and giving sensors to “qualified developers.”

Leap’s 3D motion sensing product is expected to launch early next year at $69.99. It will be compatible with either Windows or Mac OS X and is available for pre-order in the U.S. Leap has raised over $14 million in funding from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, SOSventures International, and Highland Capital Partners.
