Gene Munster: Apple TV Set Will Be 55″ at $2,000
Piper Jaffray Senior Research Analyst Gene Munster has been focusing on Internet companies since 1995. Munster is predicting that Apple will launch an LCD TV set during in the first half of 2013. The Apple television set will retail for between $1,500 and $2,000 with screen sizes that range between 42 inches and 55 inches.
“The bottom line is that evidence including our checks this week and over the past two years with component suppliers, Tim Cook’s D10 interview, Steve Jobs’ biography, and third party reports all point to Apple working on a television,” said Munster in an industry note. “We believe ‘if’ has been decided and now the question is ‘when.’”
Munster believes that the TV will be revealed in 2012 and would hit Apple’s store shelves six months after the announcement. Munster believes that the Apple TV will boost the App Store for their games, music, video, and other content. Siri would also work with the Apple LCD TV.
Munster said that the Apple LCD TV design would make the set “the stand-out centerpiece of the consumer’s living room.” However he believes that Apple would not revolutionize TV watching.
“This will take time (3-5 years), and while we believe Apple will innovate on its existing TV content offering at the launch of [its] television, we caution that the initial offering may more closely resemble the Apple TV content offering (Netflix, iTunes, and eventually Hulu),” said Munster.
