Yahoo! and Facebook Nearing Settlement For Patent Lawsuits

Yahoo! and Facebook executives are getting close to settling the patent lawsuits according to multiple sources with AllThingsD. A settlement could be made within the next few weeks and they are in advanced negotiations. The lawsuits and counterclaims would be thrown out and some sort of partnership would likely come out of this, possibly a cross-licensing arrangement.

Even though Facebook previously indicated an interest in buying some of Yahoo!’s patents, they instead decided to buy some from Microsoft. Facebook paid Microsoft $550 million to buy and license key patents that Microsoft acquired from AOL.

“Facebook paid a lot of money for patents already, just not to Yahoo,” said one of the sources. Former Yahoo! CEO Scott Thompson pushed the lawsuit against Facebook to begin with, but he was recently fired so that is no longer an issue.
