Twitter’s Mobile Revenue Starts To Outpace Their Web Product

While speaking at a conference hosted by The Economist in San Francisco, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said that the company has generated more ad revenue from their mobile platform than their website on many of the days from last quarter. I bet this makes a lot of people wonder why Twitter can make quite a bit of revenue on mobile devices, but Facebook cannot. Facebook’s mobile revenue strategy is still in development.

“We’re borne of mobile,” said Costolo when responding to a question regarding the difference between Twitter and Facebook. . “We have an ad platform that already is inherently suited to mobile, even though we launched our platform on the Web and only started running ads on mobile recently.”

Twitter now has 140 million monthly active users and 400 million tweets are written per day. Twitter’s mobile ad revenue strategy is to allow advertisers to send promotional tweets to iPhone and Android users specifically.

Although Twitter’s revenue numbers are unknown, they are believed to be hitting a run rate that equals $260 million in 2012. The company is also expected to hit $540 million by 2014.
