According to sources with AllThingsD, Apple has decided to shut down the Ping social network, a service that they launched in September 2010. Ping is one of the few Apple services that failed to gain traction. This is why they are shutting down the service and is choosing to focus on Twitter and Facebook integration. The problem with Ping was that it focused too much on e-commerce around music and it did not encourage social interactions. “We tried Ping, and I think the customer voted and said ‘This isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into,’” said Apple CEO Tim Cook at the All Things Digital conference.
