Samsung Wants Compensation From Apple Over 3G Patent Ruling

Samsung is seeking damages related to a ruling in a Dutch court. Samsung said that Apple was infringing on one of their 3G patents. Samsung was ruled in favor by the Dutch court and Apple must pay compensation for infringing on European patent EP1188269. Samsung had previously attempted to ban the sales of iPhones and iPads in Europe based on 4 patents that was essential to implementing 3G. The court ruled that the technology in question is “fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND)” licensing so Samsung was not entitled to ask for a ban to sell Apple devices. These devices would have included the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 along with the iPad 1 and 2. Apple will need to pay damages to Samsung for the devices.
