Facebook E-Mail Switch Causes Users To Lose E-Mails

Last week, Facebook imposed their users with a new @facebook.com e-mail address. The switch has caused many people to lose an unknown amount of e-mail and their address books have been altered. Facebook said that they are giving their users a choice on what e-mail address to use.

“In addition to everyone receiving an address, we’re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines,” stated a Facebook spokesperson.

Users are complaining that their mobile and personal devices that sync the address book with Facebook contacts have been altered and personal e-mails are being lost or sent elsewhere.

“Today, a co-worker discovered that his contact info for me had been silently updated to overwrite my work e-mail address with my Facebook e-mail address,” said Adobe employee Rachel Luxembourg. “He discovered this only after sending work emails to the wrong address. And even worse, the e-mails are not actually in my Facebook messages. I checked. They’ve vanished into the ether.”

If you want to change your e-mail address back to the previous e-mail address, click on the About section of your Timeline. Under the contact info selection, click on Edit and then select your preferred e-mail address.

Make sure to also check your other folder in your inbox.  “By default, messages from friends or friends of friends go into your Inbox. Everything else goes to your Other folder,” stated Facebook spokesperson Meredith Chin. “That is likely where the messages are being sent from other people’s emails. Even if that person is friends with them on Facebook, if the friend doesn’t have that email on their Facebook account, the message could end up in the Other folder.”
