If you have a computer that runs Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99.  Users across 131 countries will be able to buy the upgrade package at Windows.com when Microsoft releases the new operating system.  A DVD version of Windows 8 Pro will hit the retail stores for a price of $69.99.  The online and in-store offer will be available until January 31, 2013.

Users that bought a Windows 7 PC after June 2nd will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for $14.99.  “We set out to make it as easy as possible for everyone to upgrade to Windows 8,” said Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in a blog post.

The files, settings, and apps can be easily transferred from Windows Vista or Windows 7 to Windows 8. People that are upgrading from Windows XP will only be able to migrate their files.

“Of course, if you want to start fresh, you can choose to bring nothing along,” said LeBlanc. “Or if you prefer to format your hard drive as part of your upgrade experience, you can do so as long as you boot from media and then format your hard drive from within the setup experience for installing Windows 8, not prior to it.”
