Airtime Now Has About 200,000 Monthly Active Facebook Users

Airtime is a video chatting startup that was created by Napster founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. Sean Parker is the former President of Facebook and is known as being portrayed by Justin Timberlake in the movie “The Social Network.” When Airtime launched last month, they were plagued with technical difficulties while presenting a demo of their product with celebrities like Olivia Munn, Joel McHale, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Helms, and Jim Carrey.  So how has Airtime been doing since then?

Airtime is deeply integrated with Facebook. You can log in to the service with your Facebook ID and connect to random people within your Facebook networks in a manner that is similar to Chatroulette. It has been about a month and Airtime now has about 9,000 daily active Facebook users and 200,000 monthly active Facebook users.

Some people may call this a success because it has only been a month. However when you benchmark the Airtime app against another one month old Facebook app called SongPop, you will notice that Airtime’s growth is rather mediocre. SongPop is a “name-that-tune” type of application that grew to 2 million monthly active users in a month.

One of the biggest reasons why SongPop grew so fast is because Mark Zuckerberg personally endorsed the application in a public status message to his 15 million+ subscribers.

Airtime raised $25 million in funding and has been hiring engineers at a rapid pace since launching.  Investors in Airtime include Kleiner Perkins, Andreessen Horowitz, and Google Ventures.

I just can’t see airtime taking off. It’s not that I don’t think its a great platform, but no-one I speak to has even heard of it yet (apart from my colleagues). I know that once a site of app gets picked up it can go viral, but airtime had a relatively large launch campaign that as you show, didn’t create the biggest user base.
