Microsoft Splits From NBC, MSNBC Is Now Known As NBCNews.com

Microsoft and TV network NBC have ended their web partnership and MSNBC.com will now become NBCNews.com.  Microsoft will be creating their own web news company going forward.  MSNBC.com will relaunch as NBCNews.com early next year.  In in an interview with The New York Times, NBC News president Steve Capus said “we will fully own our digital businesses.”  Comcast will acquire Microsoft’s 50% in the joint venture that was created in 1996.  In exchange, Microsoft will receive $300 million.  Microsoft’s stake in NBC was dissolved in 2005, but they were still locked into the MSNBC.com partnership and brand.  Ad companies wanted to buy spots on both the TV newscasts and websites, but the cross-media sales did not work out because Microsoft ran the ad sales aspect of the business.  The joint venture had a special team for those types of sales.  MSNBC.com and associated websites receive 50 million unique monthly visitors according to comScore.
