India Working To Restore Power For 600 Million People

After three regional power grids collapsed, a massive power outage caused over 600 million people in India to lose power.  This was the worst blackout India has experienced in a decade.  The outage affected people in 7 states across northern India.  Officials were restoring power yesterday, but at 1:05PM, the northern grid had collapsed again.

Around the same time, the eastern grid failed said S.K. Mohanty, a power official in Orissa.  Those two grids serve half of India’s population.  At least 300 trains have been held up because of the affected regions, which caused around 500,000 railway passengers to become stranded.  India power minister Sushilkumar Shinde ordered an investigation to find out why the entire grid failed.

The last time that happened was 10 years ago.  Supposedly states that have a lot of agricultural activity may have been using more than their share of energy.

“Everyone overdraws from the grid. Just this morning I held a meeting with power officials from the states and I gave directions that states that overdraw should be punished. We have given instructions that their power supply could be cut,” he told reporters.

It will take about 10-12 hours for the power to be restored.
