AT&T Shutting Down 2G Network In 2017

AT&T is shutting down their 2G wireless network by 2017 as they are evolving to support only newer technologies.  Currently about 12% of their wireless customers (8.4 million people) are using 2G handsets as of the end up June.  This is why they are slowly phasing out the network over the next 5 years.  Most of AT&T’s customers are on 3G networks.  AT&T first introduced the 2G network in the early 1990’s and they no longer sell 2G handsets to contract or prepaid customers.
