Troy, Michigan School District Cracking Down On Sexting Students
The public school district in Troy, Michigan will punish students that text naughty pictures of themselves to friends. If a student is caught, administrators at the school will confiscate their phone and turn it over to local prosecutors. The Troy Board of Education in Michigan recently approved of a ban on students electronically communicating sexually explicit material, not because of any certain case but because of a proactive move.
According to a study conducted at 7 high schools in Texas, one in four teens had sent a nude picture of themselves by e-mail or text message. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan has a problem with the Board cracking down on students like this. The issue at hand with the ACLU is what the definition of sexting constitutes.
“Usually, this is kids being irresponsible and careless and certainly not criminals, and they shouldn’t be treated that way,” stated ACLU Michigan legal director Michael J. Steinberg.
