Progressive Insurance Slammed On Social Media Following Katie Fisher Incident [UPDATED]
Progressive Insurance is dealing with some serious heat in the way that they have treated the case of Katie Fisher. Matt Fisher, a member of New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade, posted a blog post on his Tumblr titled “My Sister Paid Progressive Insurance to Defend Her Killer In Court.” This article has been updated to reflect some of the back-and-forth between Progressive and Matt Fisher:
On June 19, 2010, Matt’s sister Katie was killed in a car accident. She was killed by a driver that ran a red light and hit Katie’s car. Fisher’s family received a small settlement from that driver’s insurance company since that driver was under-insured. Matt Fisher said that Progressive refused to honor its insurance policy.
“Don’t buy insurance from Progressive. Not only will you be paying the salaries of people who put my family through the wringer (really a smaller wringer that Progressive attached to the main wringer of my sister’s death), but also when the chips are down, your money will have bought you nothing but a kick in the face,” wrote Fisher in the blog post.
Since you cannot sue an insurer in the state of Maryland where the accident happened, Fisher’s family sued the driver. Progressive refused to settle for more than 1/3 of the amount of the policy according to Matt Fisher so the lawsuit went to trial. Fisher was surprised when he was Progressive’s legal team representing the driver that killed one of their own clients.
UPDATE: I have received a statement from Progressive Insurance about the incident — it turns out that Nationwide defended the driver (emphasis in the statement added by Pulse2):
I’d like to take this opportunity to explain Progressive’s role in this complex case. First and foremost, our deepest sympathies go out to Kaitlynn Fisher’s family.
To be very clear, Progressive did not serve as the attorney for the defendant in this case. He was defended by his insurance company, Nationwide.
There was a question as to who was at fault, and a jury decided in the Fisher family’s favor just last week. We respect the verdict and now can continue to work with the Fisher family to reach a resolution.

Update #2: Matt Fisher claims that Progressive is actually lying about their response as proven by the court records (via BoingBoing):
It is this 19th day of May, 2011, by the Circuit Court For Baltimore City, hereby ORDERED
1. That Progressive Advance Insurance Company be and is hereby allowed to intervene as a party Defendant.
2. That Progressive Insurance Company is GRANTED all rights to participate in this proceeding as if it were an original party to this case.
