Why Apple Acquired AuthenTec

Apple may be building a fingerprint scanner for future iOS devices.  In July Apple has licensed technology from AuthenTec to commercialize 2D fingerprint sensors to use in or with Apple products according to an SEC filing.  Apple is acquiring AuthenTec for $356 million as announced last month, but the deal still needs shareholder approval.  As the transaction is pending, Apple entered a joint development agreement where AuthenTec would perform the engineering.  Apple and AuthenTec first met this past February to talk about a licensing deal.  Rather than making a licensing deal, Apple simply made an offer to buy the company outright.
