Rackspace has acquired a San Francisco based Y Combinator startup company known as Mailgun.  Mailgun has developed an API for managing online e-mail inboxes for apps and websites.  Mailgun’s API is very easy to use and has sophisticated routing to provide a number of new functionalities for web apps and web pages.

Mailgun was part of the Y Combinator winter 2011 class.  In May 2011, the company raised $1.1 million in funding from SV Angel, Yuri Milner, Maynard Webb, Paul Buchheit (Gmail creator), and Geoff Ralston (Yahoo! Mail creator).

Mailgun will be made available for Rackspace Hosting customers that are integrating cloud-based e-mail services into apps and websites.  The 6 Mailgun employees will be joining Rackspace and will start working at the company’s San Francisco offices.

“Awesome products should be and will be integrated with open cloud platforms,” stated Rackspace SVP of corporate development Pat Matthews. “We want to make it easy for hundreds of thousands of customers to use Mailgun.”
