Presidential candidate Mitt Romney bought a Twitter trending topic on Thursday night. The Wall Street Journal confirmed the campaign with the Romney campaign’s digital director Zac Moffatt. Twitter confirmed that this is the first official political campaign to buy a trending topic with TheVerge. Buying a trending Twitter topic has been possible since December 2010. Sponsored trending topics are marked on Twitter’s homepage and show up in the stream in the form of hashtags. The sponsored hashtag that they bought was #RomneyRyan2012.
