Dice.com Acquires Media Business Of Geeknet, Which Includes Slashdot, SourceForge, and Freecode
Dice Holdings is the parent company of Dice.com, a careers website for people that are tech-savvy. Dice has acquired the media business owned by Geeknet. Geeknet’s media business portfolio includes properties like Slashdot, SourceForge, and Freecode. Dice.com paid $20 million for all of those properties.
Between the three properties, they are on track to hitting a $20 million turnover this year based on EBITDA of $5 million. Slashdot hits around 3.7 million unique visitors per month. Sourceforge has 40 million unique visitors and Freecode hits around 500,000 visitors per month.
Geeknet has been shopping around to sell these properties since May. Now Geeknet will be focusing exclusively on ThinkGeek, an e-commerce website that sells all sorts of interesting products like “Star Trek Cookie Cutters” and “Canned Unicorn Meat.”
Dice Holdings also owns career websites that are tailored to non-technology professionals. They also run the websites eFinancialCareers, ClearanceJobs, Rigzone, AllHealthcareJobs, and Targeted Job Fairs.

NEW YORK and FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Dice Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: DHX), a leading provider of specialized career websites, and Geeknet, Inc. (Nasdaq: GKNT) today announced that Dice Holdings has acquired Geeknet’s online media business, including Slashdot and SourceForge.

The sites include:
- Slashdot, a user-generated news, analysis, peer question and professional insight community. Tech professionals moderate the site which averages more than 5,300 comments daily and 3.7 million unique visitors each month.
- SourceForge, a destination for technology professionals and enthusiasts to develop, download, review and publish open source software, much of which they use in their own organizations. Approximately 80 percent of its roughly 40 million monthly unique visitors are outside the U.S.
- Freecode, one of the largest indexes of Linux, Unix and cross-platform software, as well as mobile applications generates nearly 500,000 unique visitors each month.

Dice Holdings acquired the business for $20 million in cash. In 2011, the online media properties generated $20 million in Revenues.
