GM and Ford Partnering To Build 8-10 Speed Automatic Transmissions

Two of the largest automotive companies are partnering with each other to jointly develop automatic gearboxes that have eight, nine, and ten forward gears.  GM powertrain spokesman Dan Flores has confirmed that GM and Ford are signing a memorandum of understanding to “develop a variety of all-new fuel-efficient transmissions.”

The companies are currently still and discussion and a formal announcement should be made soon.  GM and Ford have previously collaborated on automatic transmissions.  For example, the two companies jointly worked on a six-speed automatic gearbox back in 2002 that was used in millions of vehicles like the Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6, Ford Fusion, and Lincoln MKX.
