Felix Baumgartner Talks About Space Jump
Felix Baumgartner is best known for breaking a record for the highest jump. He actually broke the speed of sound during the jump after doing the 24 mile jump. Felix hit a speed of 88MPH during the descent. He said that he did not really feel the speed during the jump.
“In the beginning, because the air is so thin, you don’t have that noise, so you have almost no sensation of speed. You know you’re fast, but you don’t feel it,” said Mr. Baumgartner in an interview with EOnline.
Mr. Baumgartner said that the thin air made it difficult to control the body’s position.
“It starts ramping up, really violent, and then I knew, now I have to come up with something and I had to find a solution. I only had 40 seconds, because then it’s all over.” Mr. Baumgartner was able to get control of his body again and finished the 20 mile free fall to Earth without an issue.
Mr. Baumgartner said that he was scared when standing at the thin ledge of the balloon at 24 miles above the Earth.
“You would not be human if you would not have fear up there. If something goes wrong, you’re dead in 15 seconds.”
But it was well worth it.
“It is overwhelming. I mean, that view, and also the fact that when you’re standing there, there’s not a single person on the whole planet who have experienced this moment. It’s unique.”
