Meg Whitman Says HP Will Not Be Making A Phone In 2013

There has been some speculation about whether Hewlett Packard would be getting back into the smartphone business after launching smartphones like the HP Veer and the HP Pre 2.  HP CEO Meg Whitman is saying that the company will eventually get back into it, but the timing is not right yet.

HP will not be launching a smartphone in 2012 or 2013.  Whitman made that announcement during an on-stage interview at the Gartner Symposium IT Expo.

Hewlett Packard LogoHP acquired Palm in 2010, which is well before Meg Whitman became the CEO of the company.  HP shut down their smartphone hardware operations and turned the software development efforts for smartphones in a business unit called Gram.

Hewlett Packard is building tablets that will be powered by Microsoft Windows 8 instead of Palm’s webOS.
