REPORT: Apple Starts Catching Up To Android Market Share Through Heavy iPhone 5 Sales
Even though Android is dominating the smartphone market, Apple is making a comeback through strong sales of the Apple iPhone 5. According to a report from consumer research group, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Apple’s operating system accounted for 35.7% of the U.S. smartphone market as of September 30th, which is up 14.2% points from one year earlier. Android saw their dominance in smartphone market share drop from 66.4% to 57.5%.
In the United Kingdom, Apple’s marketshare grew from 18.1% to 28% while Android’s market share increased 4.8% points to 58.2%.
“While this latest data set only includes one week of iPhone 5 sales, we can see that in markets with a large number of existing Apple customers, sales have already seen a significant boost,” stated Kantar Worldpanel ComTech global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo. ”We expect this momentum to be fully realised in the next set of results.”
