BBM Voice: BlackBerry Messenger To Have Voice Calls Free On WiFi

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Messenger service will have a new voice chat feature.  BBM Voice allows you to make voice calls to other BBM users for free through a wireless Internet connection.  BBM Voice lets users talk and text at the same time and voice chat without texting.  A voice chat can also be initiated without the need to text first.

This feature is currently in Beta mode and it requires BlackBerry OS 6 or higher.  There will be a visual indicator that appears when a user’s contacts are available to take a voice chat.  This new feature will be compatible with standard BlackBerry voice accessories like a Bluetooth headset.  Users can also chat with BBM Voice usign the speakerphone.

This feature seems to compete against Apple’s FaceTime feature in a way.  However I am not certain about whether this feature will have any kind of video feed.

“The new BBM Voice feature is for when you’re travelling and you want to call home without worrying about phone charges. It’s for when you have news you can’t wait to share, for quickly explaining complicated details, and collaborating with colleagues. Whenever your ideas are too big for text, there’s BBM Voice,” stated Vice President of BBM and Social Communities at RIM T.A. McCann.
