Cinemagram Raises $8.5 Million Series A

Cinemagram is a startup that was founded in Montreal and is relocating to San Francisco.  The company raised $8.5 million in a Series A round from Menlo Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Real Ventures, and Atlas.  Cinemagram is an app that lets you create a cinemagraph.  Cinemagraphs are still photographs with minor and repeated movements like the one seen below.

At one point, the app was getting around 100,000 new users per day.  That rate has dropped to around tens of thousands per day.  The app went from a paid to a freemium model recently.  Cinemagram plans to use the funding for their backend to handle additional scale according to co-founder Temo Chalasani.
