Wikimedia Foundation Has Raised $25 Million From 1.2 Million People In 2012

The Wikimedia Foundation is the parent company of Wikipedia.  Wikimedia is considered a non-profit so Wikipedia thrives on donations.  Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites in the world and they do not have any advertisements on their website.  The company has received $25 million in 2012 from donations across 1.2 million donors.

Wikimedia Foundation executive director Sue Gardner said that she was grateful for the donations.  The donation campaign was placed on English Wikipedia websites in 5 countries including the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand for 9 days.  The most successful 24-hour period was when they brought in $2,365,564 from 145,573 donors.

Their previous fundraising record was last year when $20 million was raised from over one million donors.  Wikipedia hits around 483 million unique visitors per month.  They are the fifth-most visited website in the world.  The service is available in 285 languages with over 24 million articles contributed by over 80,000 volunteers.
