Google CEO Larry Page: Facebook Is Doing A Bad Job On Their Products

Google CEO Larry Page was recently interviewed in Wired.  Larry Page said that Google is not focused on incremental improvements on their products.  Page had some harsh words for his competition, which makes the interview a great read.  Page is very confident in his company.

His stance regarding incremental improvements:

“A big part of my job is to get people focused on things that are not just incremental. Take Gmail. When we released that, we were a search company—it was a leap for us to put out an email product, let alone one that gave users 100 times as much storage as they could get anywhere else. That is not something that would have happened naturally if we had been focusing on incremental improvements,” stated Page.

His stance on competition:

When Wired asked Page what he thinks about Steve Jobs going “thermonuclear” against Android, Page said “How well is that working?”

After Wired asked Page about competition with Facebook, he said:  “It’s not the way I think about it. We had real issues with how our users shared information, how they expressed their identity, and so on. And, yeah, they’re a company that’s strong in that space. But they’re also doing a really bad job on their products.”

In my opinion, I believe that Page is right when it comes to Facebook doing a bad job on their products.  In the last several years, it seems like the only groundbreaking products that Facebook released is the Timeline and the mobile applications.  The News feed, Messenger, unlimited photo uploads, and tagging is what seems like to be the only reason why users keep coming back.  The “big” announcement about Facebook Graph Search was rather boring too.
