The Volkswagen CrossBlue Hybrid Concept Hits 89 MPGe

At the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the CrossBlue SUV hybrid concept intended for U.S. and Canadian markets.  The CrossBlue is a mid-size SUV concept that has VW’s TDI Clean Diesel engine with 2 electric motors, a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, and electric all-wheel-drive system.  The fuel economy rating is at 89 MPGe combined in electric mode.

The CrossBlue hybrid produces up to 305 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.  The CrossBlue also hits 0-60MPH in 7.2 seconds and is said to be able to run “in zero emissions mode either at the press of a button or automatically.”  The 9.8kWh lithium-ion battery is fully charged and can “travel a distance of 14 miles in all-electric mode.”

The overall driving range is 661 miles if the 18.5-gallon fuel tank is filled with ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel.  The CrossBlue has 6 individual seats in three rows and has 12 airbags.  The CrossBlue has a 10.2-inch touchscreen in the central console for infotainment purposes and to check the status of the hybrid system.
