Judge Drops Apple’s Samsung Lawsuit Award From Over $1 Billion To $600 Million
In August 2012, Apple was awarded $1.05 billion in a lawsuit against Samsung. One month later, Apple even asked for an additional $707 million. About 7 months after the original ruling, Judge Lucy Koh has decided to void the awarded amount down to $598.9 million and she is ordering a new trial involving 14 of Samsung’s products. Judge Koh said that “the court identified an impermissible legal theory on which the jury based its award.”
The new trial will set revised damage amounts for the products that were affected by the “impermissible legal theory” in the trial which includes products like the Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Nexus S, and Infuse 4G. Judge Koh believes that Apple may be affected with damages for sales that are not included in the original case. Samsung may be able to reduce the penalty to an even lower amount.
The retrial date has not been set yet.
