Dropbox Acquires Mailbox

Dropbox has bought Mailbox, a popular e-mail application for iOS.  Mailbox will remain a separate application, but the application’s developers and team will be joining Dropbox.  CEO Drew Houston said Dropbox “could help Mailbox reach a much different audience much faster.”  Mailbox’s technology will be used to improve Dropbox’s features like the ability to handle e-mail attachments.

Mailbox was developed by a company called Orchestra, a Palo Alto, California based startup company.  People that sign up for Mailbox today have to wait in a virtual line behind hundreds of thousands of people.  This way Mailbox can scale up their servers to give their users a seamless experience.

Mailbox has hit around 1.3 million reservations since launching.  The company is delivering around 60 million messages per day.  Mailbox will be able to benefit from one of Dropbox’s biggest strengths, the ability to scale at a massive volume.

Orchestra raised around $5.3 million in Series A funding since November 2011.  Some of their investors include Charles River Ventures, SV Angel, Kapor Capital, and CrunchFund.
