Instagram Has 100 Million Users and Nearly Half Of Them Are On Android

Instagram was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion about a year ago.  Instagram launched their Android app almost exactly one year ago and they hit over 1 million users in 24 hours.  Instagram now has over 100 million monthly active users and almost half of them use the Android operating system.

“Instagram for Android has helped make this community more global than ever. Major events such as Brazil’s Círio de Nazaré festivalthe 85th birthday of Thailand’s King Bhumibol, and a streak of severe thunderstormsthroughout Malaysia have been captured by Android Instagrammers and shared to global audiences like never before. We’ve also seen Android Instagrammers contribute to the community in innovative and powerful ways, including @daveedgamboa’s incredible jumpstagrams around Southern California, photos of England’s beautiful Lancashire county from @adamgrayson and even a glimpse into the life of Kenya’s nomads from @grantsmind,” stated Philip McAllister of the Instagram Android Team.

So why are there more Instagram users on iOS?  Instagram was available exclusively on the iPhone between October 2010 and April 2012.  This means the Android version of the app is quickly catching up despite launching much later.
